Anthropic Staff Told to Work from Home Amid Possible Security Strike

A possible strike by security workers at Anthropic’s San Francisco offices has prompted the company to instruct its staff to work remotely. The move affects Monday and Tuesday of this week, a precautionary measure taken in case of a potential walkout by Allied Universal employees who provide security services for the office building.

The union representing these security workers, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), has been engaged in protracted contract negotiations with Allied since April. The SEIU is pushing for higher wages, better healthcare, and more job training for its members, including thousands of security workers across California.

Anthropic received a notice from Allied last week indicating that there might be a strike by their employees. In response, the company told its staff to work from home on Monday and Tuesday as a precautionary measure. However, the SEIU claims it had not called for a strike authorization vote or issued any strike threats for this week.

The situation highlights ongoing labor disputes in the tech industry, particularly when security is concerned. Anthropic and OpenAI have reportedly dealt with several threats against their employees in recent years, leading to increased investment in security measures.

Anthropic has a hybrid work policy that requires staff to be present in the office at least 25% of the time. But due to the possible strike, this arrangement is currently on hold for two days. The company’s decision may also be linked to its upcoming initial public offering (IPO), which it plans to file as soon as August.

Anthropic has a significant valuation of $1.5 trillion on secondary markets and is expected to make its IPO filing official in the coming months.
