AI Futures: Balancing Power and Autonomy in the Age of Machine Intelligence
OpenAI has launched AI Futures, a blog that explores the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and society. The initiative is led by OpenAI’s Strategic Futures team, which aims to answer one fundamental question: how can free societies balance individual rights and agency with the emergence of transformative AI? This inquiry is crucial because it addresses concerns about power concentration in the context of AI safety and policy.
The modern state has evolved through a complex process of bargaining between various centers of power. However, neither have we achieved the correct balance if individuals lack control over their tools and expression. No company or oligopoly should determine the economy or basic architecture of society. We must also acknowledge risks that arise from AI’s potential to act beyond its assigned tasks and build on discoveries in unforeseen ways. The recent Hugging Face incident highlighted these concerns.
The Strategic Futures team will explore how to balance individual autonomy, security, economic growth, and collective action when addressing the challenges posed by advanced machine intelligence. This requires a comprehensive approach that considers public-policy design, economics, law, history, and machine learning.
