ChatGPT Now Builds Calculators and Games into Its Answers, but Not on Pro Reasoning
OpenAI has introduced a new feature in its ChatGPT model called Intelligent UI, which allows the chatbot to create interactive responses that include calculators, games, and other visual elements. This capability is available for users with Instant through Extra High reasoning settings, but it does not work on Pro reasoning. The update was rolled out globally on October 7 for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers in the Chat tab.
The Intelligent UI feature uses a library of native streamable components to create interactive responses that can include graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts, and more. According to OpenAI, the model has been trained to compose responses using text, visuals, and interactive elements, choosing how they fit together based on the user’s question. This means that users may receive a plain text answer if it is deemed the most useful response.
The rollout of Intelligent UI began with Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers in the Chat tab on October 7. However, Free and Go subscribers had to wait until October 8 to access this feature. It’s worth noting that Enterprise availability depends on workspace admin settings. Additionally, OpenAI has confirmed that both GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna models are being used for Intelligent UI, with the former serving Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers, while the latter serves Free and Go users.
The new feature also brings a change in pacing to ChatGPT’s responses. OpenAI has trained GPT-6 to interleave thinking with answering, building a reply across several partial responses rather than making users wait for the reasoning to finish. This means that questions requiring web searches can be answered 44% sooner on average compared to GPT-5.6 Instant. In internal evaluations of high-value everyday agentic tasks, GPT-6 Extra High began answering in the same time as GPT-5.6 Medium while scoring better overall than GPT-5.6 Extra High.
However, there is an exception to this new feature: Pro reasoning users will not be able to access Intelligent UI. According to OpenAI’s release notes, the Pro reasoning option continues to use GPT-6 Astra and does not support Intelligent UI. This means that users with Pro reasoning settings will receive plain prose answers instead of interactive responses. It is unclear whether Astra will eventually support the component library used for Intelligent UI.
OpenAI has also confirmed that it has not changed the models behind ChatGPT Work and Codex, which remain unchanged from previous versions. The company’s announcement notes that there is still work ahead to improve the model’s design judgment and expand what it can create with Intelligent UI. With over 1.2 billion people using ChatGPT each week, this update marks a significant step forward in the chatbot’s capabilities.
