OpenAI Expands ChatGPT for Teens with College Planning Tools
OpenAI is introducing new features to its ChatGPT for Teens mode, which was launched in August with built-in safeguards and reminders. The company has added a tool specifically designed to help users navigate the college application process.
The College Planner feature allows students to keep track of deadlines and requirements for multiple colleges on their list. This centralized plan includes information about financial aid steps, tasks, and application deadlines, making it easier for students to stay organized and focused.
According to OpenAI, this new tool will enable users to update their progress, use a timeline to plan ahead, and identify what still needs to be done. Students can also ask ChatGPT questions related to the college planning process, such as clarifying specific requirements or getting started with applications.
The College Planner feature is set to arrive ‘soon,’ although OpenAI has not provided an exact release date. Initially, this tool will focus on students in grades 10 through 12 who are planning to attend a four-year college in the US.
In addition to the new College Planner feature, OpenAI is updating ChatGPT with other tools aimed at supporting users’ academic endeavors. On iOS devices, users can now upload multiple photos and convert them into a single PDF using a continuous capture function.
ChatGPT will also be able to generate flashcards based on user notes, making it easier for students to review and study material. These updates come amidst controversy surrounding ChatGPT’s role in assisting with homework and its lack of parental notification features.
A recent report by Common Sense Media deemed ChatGPT for Teens an ‘unacceptable risk,’ citing concerns about the AI tool doing kids’ homework without adequate oversight or alerts to parents when necessary. OpenAI has responded, stating that teens typically spend less than 15 minutes per day using ChatGPT.
