ChatGPT Gains Browser-Based Capabilities with Chrome Extension Update

·

OpenAI has released an update to its ChatGPT extension for Google’s Chrome browser, granting the AI assistant more capabilities within the browser. The latest upgrade allows ChatGPT to access and analyze open tabs in Chrome, enabling it to provide more personalized and relevant responses to user queries.

The company had previously developed a standalone browser, but retired it on August 9th of this year. However, OpenAI continued to improve its Chrome extension, making ChatGPT a viable alternative to other AI-powered browsers like Gemini within the browser environment. With these latest updates, ChatGPT can now perform even more tasks directly in Chrome.

The update enables users to ask ChatGPT to analyze and compare information across multiple tabs, such as comparing different couch models based on dimensions, prices, delivery time, and return policies. This feature is particularly useful for users who need to make informed decisions quickly, without having to manually switch between tabs or windows.

For more complex tasks, the updated Chrome extension also allows users to utilize ChatGPT Work, a specialized agent designed for multi-step tasks. With this tool, users can ask ChatGPT to send messages, fill out forms, organize tabs, and even draft emails based on their needs. For instance, users can instruct ChatGPT to fill out a form for a new dentist appointment and then schedule it in the calendar.
