US Marines Seeks AI-Powered System to Automate Armory Inventory
MARSOC is looking for a new technology that can automate its armory inventory management. Right now, they’re stuck with manual recordkeeping, which has become a real pain.
A few weeks ago, MARSOC published a notice outlining what it’s looking for in this new system. One of the key requirements is something called a ‘secure, zero-signature automated armory’. That means the system needs to use digital images and computer vision to identify and log all sorts of gear as it comes in or goes out.
The AI-powered system they want would change how inventory management works big time. It would take care of depot registrations for tactical capabilities and eliminate a lot of labor-intensive tasks that are currently taking up a ton of manpower while increasing the risk of errors. MARSOC points out that manual recordkeeping is not just slow, it’s also really prone to mistakes.
One of the most important things about this new system is that it can’t rely on radio frequency identification or Bluetooth transmitters to prevent data breaches. That means alternative methods have to be used to track inventory accurately and securely.
MARSOC will host an industry event in mid-September where they’ll explore commercially available technologies and work with Florida-based nonprofit SOFWERX. This collaboration is all about getting industry, academic institutions, and national laboratories together to talk with MARSOC personnel before the formal assessment phase begins in late October.
Companies that are chosen to participate will get a chance to present their innovations during the December assessment phase, which could lead to prototype agreements or acquisition contracts – or even research partnerships. This is an opportunity for innovators to show off what they’ve got and potentially work with MARSOC on developing an AI-powered system.
The industry event is only open to American companies and individuals, and requests to attend have to be in by August. MARSOC hopes to partner with qualified organizations that can help them develop a system capable of automating armory inventory management.
