Tennessee Launches 'It's Real' Campaign to Combat AI-Generated Images in Tourism Photos
Tennessee has taken a stand against the growing presence of artificial intelligence-generated images online by launching an initiative called the ‘It’s Real’ campaign. The program aims to certify tourism photos as authentic, ensuring that travelers get what they expect from their destinations.
The campaign is led by Visit Franklin and Tennessee’s tourism department in partnership with local photographers who capture real-life moments at popular tourist spots. One such location is Franklin, a charming town known for its picturesque landscapes and vibrant atmosphere.
Franklin has long been described as a ‘Hallmark town,’ where the charm of the place comes alive through authentic imagery. Visit Franklin’s Matt Maxey, a photographer himself, believes that this authenticity cannot be replicated by AI-generated images.
‘When you look at people in real life, you can see emotions on their faces,’ Maxey said. ‘It’s not something you can fully recreate artificially.’ This emphasis on human touch is what makes the ‘It’s Real’ campaign so unique and appealing to travelers.
Tennessee Commissioner of Tourist Development Mark Ezell highlighted the importance of authenticity in travel marketing. According to research, 74% of people rely on online photos before visiting a destination, with about 70% expressing disappointment when they find that images do not match reality.
Ezell noted that Tennessee is the first state to launch such an initiative and hopes it will set a precedent for other states and industries. ‘You can trust what you see in these photographs,’ he said. ‘It helps in marketing.’ The campaign’s focus on authenticity, rather than opposing AI-generated images outright, has earned it praise from industry experts.
The ‘It’s Real’ seal is awarded to photos that meet strict criteria: they must be taken by real photographers at the actual location and only minimally retouched. Additionally, metadata will include information about who took the photo, when it was captured, and where the image was shot.
By promoting authentic images, Visit Franklin aims not only to showcase the beauty of Tennessee but also to celebrate the people behind these photographs – local artists capturing unique moments in their communities. The campaign’s success has already sparked interest from other states looking to follow suit.
The ‘It’s Real’ initiative is a comprehensive effort to address concerns about AI-generated images and provide travelers with accurate representations of destinations. As Ezell emphasized, it’s not just about fighting fake photos but also about promoting the value of authentic storytelling in travel marketing.
