Penn Carey Law Welcomes Diverse LLM Class of 2027 with AI Expertise
International lawyers from nearly forty countries have arrived at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. This diverse group is a major milestone for the institution’s graduate programs.
On August third, the law school officially welcomed one thirty bright and accomplished lawyers from around the world. These students come from 35 countries, regions, and territories – each with their own unique perspective to bring.
The Class of 2027 includes two notable members: two LLCM students, including one Penn Carey Law alum, are part of this group, along with three incoming SJD students who have impressive academic backgrounds. They’re not just ordinary lawyers; they’re exceptionally talented individuals.
Helen Rho, Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs, praised the Class of 2027’s exceptional talent and dedication to others. ‘They’re remarkably hard-working,’ she noted, ‘and care about making a positive impact.’
The new LLM class brings expertise in various areas, including investment funds, asset management, corporate governance, intellectual property, arbitration, litigation, compliance, dispute resolution, energy regulation, real estate, and emerging fields like legal tech. Many of these students have experience working for government agencies, multinational corporations, law firms, NGOs, or the judiciary – showcasing their diverse professional backgrounds.
Interestingly, every LLM class member is a fully trained attorney in their home country, with the ability to speak at least two languages. Some are even proficient in up to six languages – reflecting the program’s global perspective and commitment to diversity.
The Class of 2027 showcases an impressive range of extracurricular interests and hobbies. From sports enthusiasts who enjoy fencing, horseback riding, martial arts, go-karting, weight training, hiking, or skiing to musicians, bakers, tea cultivators, or ballroom dancers – each student brings a unique passion to the table.
The University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School received over 1100 applications from applicants who earned their first degree in law in 75 different countries. The rigorous full-time LLM program allows students to customize their curriculum, focusing on a specific area or exploring new interests with guidance from faculty advisors.
Students can choose between two concentrations: Intellectual Property and Technology Law, and Energy, Security, and Human Rights. They can also enroll in the Wharton Business and Law Certificate Program – providing valuable interdisciplinary opportunities that foster collaboration between law and business students.
The program’s innovative pre-term component includes over 20 co-curricular programs designed to help students transition into academic life alongside their JD counterparts. Examples include speed networking, team building exercises, cross-cultural communication workshops, or mindfulness sessions – all aimed at promoting a smooth integration into the Penn Carey Law community.
