AI-Generated Images May Be Unattributable, Study Finds

A new study published in Nature Communications has found that AI-generated images may be unattributable to their training data. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) used a generative artificial intelligence model trained on public-domain artwork from 744 different artists to produce a single portrait. They then simulated removing each artist from the training data, one by one, and generated the image again in each scenario. The results showed that nearly all versions of the generated image looked almost identical to the original.
