Upriver Raises $14 Million to Automate Data Engineering for AI Projects

A major breakthrough has been reached by Israeli startup Upriver Data Ltd. The company raised a whopping $14 million in new capital, marking an important milestone in its mission to automate data work that enterprises rely on for their artificial intelligence projects.

The funding boost comes at a critical time when many organizations are struggling with stalled AI deployments due to poor data quality and availability. This is not just a technical issue; it's also a major roadblock to realizing the full potential of AI.

Upriver's platform handles end-to-end data engineering workflows, including finding and resolving quality problems, maintaining pipelines, and creating new datasets. It achieves this by pairing its context engine – which maps the structure of an organization’s data – with a coordinated system of agents that validate results across fragmented data stacks.

The company makes it easy for developers to integrate Upriver's platform into their existing workflows. Developers can access the platform through popular AI development tools like Anthropic PBC's Claude and Cursor, streamlining the process of building and deploying AI models.

Upriver was founded in 2024 by Chief Executive Ido Bronstein and Chief Technology Officer Omri Lifshitz. The startup has already gained traction with notable customers such as Unity Software Inc., Daily Mail and General Trust plc, and Databricks Inc.

One customer that achieved significant success is Web search infrastructure firm Nimble Way Ltd. After deploying Upriver's platform, they reported a 60% increase in productivity. This achievement highlights the potential of Upriver’s solution in real-world applications.

The funding round was led by Valley Capital Partners and Hetz Ventures, with angel backing from notable figures such as New Relic Inc. founder Lew Cirne, Cyera Ltd. founders Yotam Segev and Tamar Bar-Ilan, and Great Expectations Labs Inc. founder Abe Gong. Guy Fighel of Hetz Ventures noted that Upriver goes deeper than rivals by integrating with the data stack itself.

Upriver plans to use the capital to expand its engineering team and go-to-market efforts. This will enable them to deepen product development, accelerate enterprise deployments, and make data infrastructure invisible so enterprises can extract their organizational knowledge from messy data.

The challenge for many organizations seeking to deploy AI effectively is poor data quality or limited data availability. According to Gartner Inc., 38% of technology leaders pointed to these issues as direct causes of AI project failure in April, while at least 50% of generative AI projects had been abandoned after the proof-of-concept stage due to data quality concerns.

Organizations need a reliable data foundation that can be easily maintained. Upriver's solution aims to address this problem by automating enterprise data engineering for AI assistants and other applications. By providing a platform that enables developers to focus on building and deploying AI models, rather than wrestling with data issues, organizations like Nimble Way Ltd. can unlock new insights.

Upriver's goal is simple: make it possible for enterprises to extract value from their organizational knowledge by automating enterprise data engineering and streamlining the process of working with messy data.
