Tesla Rolls Out Track Mode for Model S Plaid Owners with Latest Software Update
Tesla has added Track Mode to the Model S Plaid, a feature previously available on other models. The update is part of software version 2021.44.30.
The introduction of Track Mode follows a similar path as its release on the Model 3 Performance in late 2018 and subsequent updates for that model.
Track Mode allows owners to fine-tune their vehicle's settings, including disabling or toning down features like traction control. It also enables adjustments to handling, traction control, and regenerative braking.
When Track Mode is enabled, the car will precondition its battery for peak performance and increase brake cooling. If the brakes cannot cool sufficiently, a warning will be displayed with a 'critically high brake temperature' message.
The instrument cluster's visualizations change when Track Mode is engaged, displaying additional details about the vehicle. This includes showing internal components such as the chassis, wheels, brakes, motors, and battery, each colored to provide feedback on their specific status.
Track Mode also offers features like setting start and finish markers on a map, automatically recording lap timings and saving each lap as a separate video to the USB drive using the car's cameras. The cameras used during Track Mode are the same ones available when using the Dashcam feature.
The release notes for Track Mode in 2021.44.30 highlight its capabilities: 'Optimize your Plaid configuration for dynamic driving exclusively on closed courses and experience unmatched performance at many different venues.' To enable, owners can tap Controls > Pedals & Steering > Track Mode.
