Synopsys Teams Up with AMD and Microsoft to Boost Chip Design
Semiconductor design company Synopsys is teaming up with AMD and Microsoft to take the next step in using agentic AI for chip development. The collaboration’s goal is to speed up the creation of cutting-edge AI infrastructure silicon by combining large-scale reasoning, domain expertise, and cloud computing power.
The new features are available for testing through Microsoft Discovery, a platform that supports scientific research and engineering projects. This partnership aims to enable design workflows powered by artificial intelligence that automate parts of chip development from initial specification right through debugging.
Synopsys has introduced two brand-new electronic design automation (EDA) workflows that coordinate multiple AI agents working on specialized tasks while integrating with existing tools and processes. Initial trials of the autonomous debug closure workflow showed a substantial decrease in time spent on this task, reaching as low as 40% less compared to traditional methods.
AMD is using the technology for its semiconductor design efforts, while Microsoft provides cloud-based infrastructure through Microsoft Discovery to support evaluation and deployment of AI-driven workflows. The collaboration hopes to help engineering teams reduce manual effort and speed up their path to silicon production.
This partnership represents a major push towards automating chip development processes with agentic AI. By streamlining these tasks, Synopsys aims to make it easier for engineers to focus on high-level design decisions rather than getting bogged down in tedious work.
