Reddit's Potential as an Early Warning System for Drug Harms Highlighted in New Study
The online platform Reddit has shown potential as a tool for identifying new drug trends and safety concerns far sooner than formal surveillance systems. A recent study involving LDI Senior Fellow Jeanmarie Perrone highlights the benefits of using data analysis tools to monitor evolving substance use patterns in near real-time.
One of the top 10 most visited websites in the U.S., Reddit is a social media platform structured around conversations and forums, called ‘subreddits,’ that encourage anonymous discussion on diverse topics. This structure allows for public discourse and cultural trends to be reflected in user posts, providing valuable insights into societal issues.
The study analyzed Reddit posts from 2005-2024 on tianeptine products – also known as gas station heroin, dope, or zaza. Tianeptine is an atypical antidepressant that has been linked to dependence and harm in countries where it is regulated as an approved antidepressant. People reportedly use it to manage pain, opioid dependence, depression, or anxiety.
It’s often sold in convenience stores, smoke shops, and online, which raises concerns about its accessibility and potential for misuse. The study found a sharp increase in posts mentioning tianeptine from 1,555 in 2022 to 2,358 in 2023, indicating growing interest in the substance among Reddit users.
Manual analysis of these posts revealed themes of tianeptine dependence, management of withdrawal symptoms, and discussions of other unregulated substances, such as kratom. These findings highlight Reddit’s potential as a tool for capturing drug trends and problems before they become widespread issues.
The study used natural language processing to analyze the Reddit posts, which allowed researchers to monitor evolving substance use patterns in near real-time. According to Perrone, ‘natural language processing-assisted approaches can help monitor evolving substance use patterns in near real time.’
This approach has significant implications for public health research and policy-making. By leveraging data from online platforms like Reddit, policymakers may be able to identify emerging trends and develop targeted interventions before they become major problems.
The study’s findings were published in the article ‘Self-Reported Tianeptine Experiences on Reddit: Natural Language Processing–Assisted Qualitative Study’ in July 2026.
