Grassroots Gatherings Humanize the AI Boom, One Conversation at a Time

San Francisco’s tech scene is abuzz with activity as companies like Anthropic and OpenAI push the boundaries of artificial intelligence. But amidst all the hype, there are those who want to slow down and think critically about the impact of AI on society. Enter grassroots gatherings like the AI Salon and the AI Collective, which aim to humanize the AI boom by fostering open discussions among diverse groups.

These meetups bring together individuals from various backgrounds – students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and even neuroscientists – to share their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities presented by AI. The goal is not just to provide a platform for debate but also to create a safe space where people can engage in meaningful conversations without feeling overwhelmed or left behind.

The AI Salon, founded in San Francisco in 2023, has chapters in Bengaluru and Lagos, with volunteers running the show. These gatherings are limited to about 20 participants, ensuring that everyone gets a chance to contribute to the discussion. Topics range from AI’s impact on climate change and education to its potential applications in art and intimacy.

Sharat Satyanarayana, head of the Bengaluru chapter, emphasizes the importance of bringing together people from both the AI and non-AI worlds for more thoughtful perspectives on the broader discussions around AI. ‘There’s so much going on in AI that it’s overwhelming,’ he says. ‘We need to provide a space where folks can engage with each other and share their insights.’
