Google NotebookLM Gets Major AI Upgrade with Gemini 3.5 and Antigravity Support
Google's NotebookLM, a research tool that uses generative AI to analyze specific sources like documents and webpages, has received one of its biggest updates yet. The platform is now powered by the latest Gemini 3.5 model, which promises faster and more efficient processing compared to its predecessor.
The update also brings support for more file types, allowing NotebookLM to generate documents in a variety of formats beyond text outputs. This includes infographics, quizzes, audio overviews, and other specialized outputs that can be accessed through the Studio Panel.
NotebookLM's ability to find sources on its own has been improved with the addition of web source integration. Users can now ask Gemini to search for relevant sources fitting their needs, which are then presented as a 'research report' with options to import all or some of those sources into the notebook.
The tool also comes with embedded support for Antigravity, which enables NotebookLM to write and run code in service of research goals. This is made possible through the introduction of a cloud computer that allows users to build workflows within their notebooks without needing to switch between apps.
Google has claimed that companies worried about token costs can save big by moving their projects to Gemini 3.5, while still achieving outputs similar or better in quality compared to older models. NotebookLM's reliance on user-provided sources is what sets it apart from other AI tools for business, but this update aims to strike a balance between human input and automated research.
The company has conducted side-by-side evaluations of NotebookLM using the old Gemini 3.1 branch and the updated 3.5 model, with results showing an average win rate of 65 percent in favor of the newer version across five core evaluation dimensions: Accuracy and Quality, Multilingual Support, Large Document Analysis, Document Creation, and Advanced Research.
The update is starting to roll out today, but most NotebookLM users won't see any changes just yet. The new features are initially available to AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access or AI Expanded Access. Other Google accounts will receive the updates in the near future.
