Google May Have Indexed Shared Claude Conversations

A recent discovery on Reddit has raised concerns about the privacy of conversations with Anthropic’s AI chatbot, Claude. Users who have shared their Claude chats with friends may have inadvertently made them publicly available via Google Search.

When users share specific Claude conversations using a feature provided by Anthropic, it creates a static page that allows others to view and share the conversation as well. However, this sharing also makes the conversation indexable by search engines like Google.

According to Reddit, several users had their shared Claude conversations indexed by Google, including one who was creating a crypto wallet and accidentally exposed sensitive information, and another who sought legal advice from the chatbot on whether they needed to self-report a breach of conduct. These conversations were publicly searchable on Google until recently.

The issue has been addressed after Reddit users noticed that shared Claude conversations were being indexed by Google Search. Anthropic has since de-indexed and removed all shared Claude conversations from its search engine, making them no longer accessible via Google.

But how did this happen in the first place? By default, Claude conversations are private, but when users share specific chats using the feature provided by Anthropic, it doesn’t include ‘noindex’ tags that would prevent search engines like Google from indexing the page. This means each shared conversation had the potential to be indexed.

Reddit users were able to find these shared conversations by searching for a specific query: ‘site:claude.ai/share.’ This search term pulls up all indexed pages using this URL structure, which every shared Claude conversation utilized.

This incident is not an isolated case. Last year, ChatGPT users experienced the same issue when their shared conversations were also being indexed by Google. OpenAI pulled the feature once users began finding these conversations in Google Search.

The same thing happened with Claude before too. Just one month after the ChatGPT incident, shared Claude conversations were discovered in Google Search. Anthropic was able to remove them from Google and addressed the issue at the time, saying it had blocked search engine crawlers. However, it seems that shared Claude chats were still being indexed.

Mashable has reached out to Anthropic for more information on this matter, but as of now, there is no further comment available.
