Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas Cast as Leads for True Detective Season 5
Casting announcements have been made official for the upcoming fifth season of HBO’s anthology series True Detective. Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will star in lead roles, with production set to begin in 2027. Both actors had been rumored to be attached to the show since last year, with Cage first reported to be in talks for a lead role in summer 2025.
Cage all but confirmed his involvement during an appearance at New York Comic Con, stating that he might do another season of television and possibly True Detective. HBO has kept story details under wraps, but revealed character names: Cage will play Henry Logan, while Banderas will portray Rai Garcia. The show’s fourth season, Night Country, concluded with strong ratings and critical praise in February 2024.
HBO picked up a fifth season shortly after the conclusion of Night Country, which was well-received by audiences and critics alike. Issa López, who served as showrunner for Night Country, will return to that role in season five. López executive produces alongside Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Cage, Banderas, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, series creator Nic Pizzolatto, and several other notable industry professionals.
Cage’s recent projects include the Prime Video film Spider-Noir and Madden, where he plays NFL coach John Madden. He is represented by WME, Stride Management, and attorney Patrick Knapp. Banderas’ credits include the Anthony Bourdain biopic Tony, Babygirl, and Up Against It, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. His representatives are NuCo Media Group and Greenberg Glusker.
