Anthropic Releases Publicly Available AI Model with Enhanced Safety Features

After initially limiting access to its powerful Mythos-like model, Anthropic has announced the public release of Claude Fable 5. This move comes two months after a private rollout that sparked concerns about potential misuse.

The company claims it's now possible to make this model available due to new safeguards blocking responses in high-risk areas such as cybersecurity and biology. These safety measures are designed to prevent harm, allowing users to benefit from the technology without causing damage.

Anthropic's head of product management for research, Dianne Penn, emphasized that their goal is to provide valuable benefits while minimizing potential risks. She described this approach as 'a race to the top,' where they strive to deliver more benefits than harm.

The company gained attention in April with the unveiling of Mythos, which excels at identifying security flaws within software. Initially, Anthropic stated it wouldn't make Mythos generally available and limited its rollout to a select group for Project Glasswing's cybersecurity initiative.

However, with Claude Fable 5, Anthropic is moving closer to its goal of deploying powerful models at scale. This release also coincides with growing momentum and investor interest in the company ahead of an anticipated massive IPO this year.

Claude Fable 5 demonstrates exceptional performance across software engineering and knowledge work tasks, outperforming Claude Opus 4.8 on some benchmarks by over 10%. The model represents a significant jump in capability, prompting Anthropic to implement additional safety measures to prevent misuse.

If users ask high-risk questions, the model will block its response and fall back to Claude Opus 4.8 for safe answers. Penn explained that they've built new classifiers and guardrails specifically for this launch, ensuring responsible use of the technology.

Anthropic has also launched an updated Mythos model called Claude Mythos 5, which is essentially the same underlying model as Claude Fable 5 but with some safeguards lifted in certain areas.

The public release of Claude Fable 5 comes just days after Anthropic confidentially filed its IPO prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission. This sets up a potentially historic share sale following the company's period of explosive growth this year, which has seen its revenue run rate balloon to $47 billion from last year's annual revenue of roughly $10 billion.

Anthropic recently closed a funding round at a valuation of $965 billion, surpassing OpenAI's value of $852 billion in March. Both companies are gearing up for major IPOs, with Anthropic under pressure to justify its valuation to investors.
