Meta Unveils New AI Model Rivaling Chinese Competition

·

Meta has launched its most advanced open-weight artificial intelligence (AI) model to date, Muse Spark Open. This new model is designed to rival leading Chinese AI models such as Qwen and Kimi K3, which have dominated the market in recent years.

According to Meta’s chief of AI Alexandr Wang, Muse Spark Open is a significant development for the company. In a tweet, Wang described the model as ‘the most capable US open-weight model to date,’ with 816 billion total parameters and 42 billion active parameters. The model also boasts a 1 million-token context and native multimodal capabilities.

Muse Spark Open is an open-weight AI model, which means that developers can download its parameters or weights and customize them as needed. This approach differs from closed models like Anthropic’s Claude or OpenAI’s ChatGPT, where the underlying code is not accessible to users. Wang emphasized that Muse Spark Open ‘excels at long-horizon tasks, complex software engineering, and multi-step reasoning,’ making it a valuable tool for developers.

Meta has been working on improving its AI capabilities in recent years, with a focus on developing more advanced open-weight models. The company’s efforts have paid off, as Muse Spark Open is now considered one of the top contenders in the market. Chinese developers such as Alibaba and Moonshot AI have previously dominated this space, but Meta’s new model has closed the gap.

Muse Spark Open requires significant computing power to run efficiently, but users can create a ‘supercomputer’ on their own desktop by running the model on two Mac Studios with M5 Ultra chips. This collaboration between Meta and Apple is an unusual partnership that highlights the growing importance of AI in the tech industry.
