Reddit CEO Warns of Google AI Mode's Impact on Traffic

·

The Reddit chief executive, Steve Huffman, recently shared his concerns about the impact of Google’s AI Mode on traffic to the platform. During a Q3 2026 earnings call, he stated that search referral traffic was ‘down meaningfully in this quarter.’ He attributed this decline to Google’s shift towards AI Mode and AI Overviews, which he described as a fundamental change in how the Google product works.

Huffman emphasized that AI Mode does not drive traffic for anyone, including Reddit. This statement is significant, given that Reddit has historically relied heavily on search referrals from Google. The company’s reliance on this source of traffic has been a key factor in its growth and success.

The numbers from Q3 2026 support Huffman’s concerns about the impact of AI Mode on traffic to Reddit. According to CNBC, search referrals fell by more than 1 million per week on average during October. This decline is particularly notable given that Reddit is one of the most-searched words on Google.

Despite this decline in search referrals, Reddit’s revenue actually increased in Q3 2026. The company reported a 53% year-over-year growth in revenue, which exceeded analyst expectations. However, the decline in search referrals and the corresponding drop in traffic to the platform are still cause for concern.

Huffman also highlighted another factor that has contributed to the decline in traffic: machine-translated content now ranks lower in Google results. This change has had a particularly significant impact on international traffic, which is already a challenging area for Reddit to navigate.

Reddit’s non-advertising revenue, mostly AI data licensing, hit $48 million in Q3 2026, up 35%. OpenAI and Google are the main partners. The irony of this situation is not lost on observers: Google pays Reddit for access to its conversations, then presents answers built partly on that material in a format that sends fewer visitors back.

The company’s reliance on AI data licensing revenue has grown significantly over the past year. In Q3 2026, it accounted for about $192 million of annualized revenue, which is meaningful but still small compared to ad revenue. The exact terms and renewal talks between Reddit and its partners remain undisclosed.

Reddit’s decision to shift towards a primarily logged-in experience is seen as an attempt to mitigate the impact of AI Mode on traffic. This move will involve gradual login walls and some retained access for logged-out users. However, the long-term goal is for logged-in and app users to converge with total daily users.

The company has not yet disclosed which markets it plans to test this new approach in during Q4 2026. The timing and limits on what logged-out users can see remain undecided pending further testing. Reddit’s community creates fresh content daily, and 41% of its audience already logs in, giving the platform an advantage over many other publishers.

Publishers facing AI summaries have roughly three options: stay open and accept lower clicks, wall off content behind accounts, or sell access to AI companies. Reddit is now trying a blend of the second and third approaches. The company wants people to come for the conversation itself, not just for a single answer.

The first lesson from Reddit’s experience is to convert anonymous visitors into known ones. This can be achieved by offering newsletters or accounts early in the visit, building features that reward returning users, and tracking direct traffic and email referrals more closely.

Measuring presence inside AI answers is another key takeaway from Reddit’s situation. Tracking whether assistants cite your pages, how often your brand appears for target questions, and which competitors share those answers can provide valuable insights into an AI company’s reliance on a particular source of data.

The third fix targets the content itself: AI summaries handle generic questions well, so pages that merely restate common knowledge lose the click first. Pages that offer original data, tools, calculators, firsthand testing, or community discussion give readers a reason to leave the summary and engage with the platform more deeply.

Reddit’s long-term bet follows this logic: it wants people to come for the conversation itself, not just for a single answer. Publishers can copy this principle on a smaller scale by asking what a reader gets from their page that a two-paragraph summary cannot deliver, then building more of that content.

The reaction to Reddit’s Q3 2026 earnings report has been mixed.

OpenAI and Google are the main partners, with the exact terms and renewal talks remaining undisclosed.

Many people already avoid forced sign-ups, which is why tools that work without accounts keep gaining attention. Reddit’s decision to phase walls in gradually and test outside the U.S. first shows how carefully a company with 130 million daily users approaches this risk.

Market Impact: Shares, Guidance, and Wall Street

The guidance did the damage. Reddit forecast Q4 revenue of $1.0 billion to $1.03 billion, which PPC Land put at 38% to 42% growth. Wall Street had modeled $1.05 billion. Growth of 53% in Q3 falling to roughly 40% in Q4 is a visible deceleration.

The user warning stung more. Reddit said daily active uniques could fall by a low-double-digit percentage in Q4. Applied to the 130.3 million base, that points to roughly 115 million to 117 million, a range several outlets cited.
