Dungeon Fighter Online Faces Backlash Over AI-Generated Event Artwork

Dungeon Fighter Online has become embroiled in a controversy surrounding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in creating event artwork. The issue centers on the ‘Magical Boy’ events, which were launched following maintenance on October 1. These events feature illustrations that have sparked debate among players regarding their authenticity and artistic style.

The Magical Boy Photo Legendary Card, one of the rewards for participating in the ‘HOT DEBUT! Magical Boys’ event, has been at the forefront of this controversy. Four cards – Captain Thunder Honey, Macho Pink Heart Breaker, Dark Devil Foxy, and Big Bear Milky Way – were revealed as part of this event. However, it was not until players began scrutinizing these images that concerns about AI-generated artwork arose.

A notice on the event page explicitly states that ‘Some images were created by utilizing AI generation and retouching.’ While this disclosure has fueled debate over how extensively AI was used in creating these illustrations, specific production details remain unclear. The extent to which AI contributed to image generation versus retouching is not specified, leaving room for interpretation.

Players have pointed out the detailed rendering on the cards as evidence that they may be AI-generated. Given the event page’s acknowledgment of AI use, the focus has shifted from whether AI was used at all to how it was utilized in the creation process. This nuance underscores the complexity of this controversy.

Some players have also drawn comparisons between the artwork and Hirohiko Araki’s manga ‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’, citing similarities in pose, shading, and facial expressions. However, no confirmation has been made regarding whether the actual production process referenced a specific work or artist.

In response to player concerns, Nexon has announced that it will modify the event images. An official notice on its website states that ‘Some awkward image resources’ from the ‘HOT DEBUT! Magical Boys - Magical Boy Photo Legendary Card Album’ will be updated. Additionally, Nexon expressed apologies for any inconvenience caused by the insufficient polish of AI illustrations and pledged to reinforce inspection and retouching processes to prevent similar quality issues in the future.
