Anthropic's Shift Away from Junior Staff as AI Agents Take Over
The tech industry is witnessing a significant shift in the way companies approach hiring, with Anthropic being one of the pioneers. The company has seen a substantial decline in junior staff hires, particularly in technical roles, due to its increasingly capable AI agents.
In an internal study published by Anthropic, it was revealed that the share of junior positions in technical departments dropped from 21% to 14% since early 2025. New hires took an even bigger hit, with their junior share falling from 27% to just 9%. The decline in open junior roles was particularly sharp starting in December 2025.
The company attributes this shift to the growing capabilities of its AI agents, which are now logging six times as many work hours as human employees. Tasks such as writing code and finding bugs are increasingly being handed off to Claude, a key AI agent developed by Anthropic. Junior hiring declined most significantly in roles where Claude handles complex work.
The productivity gains from this shift are undeniable, with engineers shipping 5.1 times as many code commits, data scientists running 3.1 times as many queries, and the legal team processing 3.1 times as many contracts. Sales closed 1.7 times as many deals, recruiters hired 1.4 times as many people, and accounting handled 1.4 times as many invoices.
The study itself acknowledges that Anthropic is a special case due to its extreme reliance on AI technology. However, the results raise concerns about the broader implications of relying heavily on automation in the workforce. Researcher Nolan Lovett warns that this trend could lead to a ‘tragedy of the cognitive commons,’ where companies benefit from efficiency gains while spreading costs across future generations.
