Netanyahu Adviser Asked ChatGPT for Qatar Image Boost

·

Jonathan Urich, an adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has been accused of seeking help from the chatbot ChatGPT to improve Qatar’s image in Israel and worldwide. According to a report by N12, a TV channel based in Israel, investigators showed Urich correspondence obtained during their investigation into his activities related to Qatar. The report suggests that Urich asked ChatGPT for ideas on how to boost the reputation of Qatar’s prime minister and emir.

The alleged requests were made as part of an investigation known as ‘Qatargate,’ which centers around allegations that Netanyahu’s associates may have received illicit payments from sources linked to Qatar. The money was allegedly used to spread pro-Qatar messages in Israel, with possible offenses including bribery, contacts with a foreign agent, and money laundering. Urich has denied any wrongdoing, claiming he did not act on behalf of Qatar in his interactions with the media, public, or prime minister.

Urich’s denials notwithstanding, investigators have found evidence that he asked ChatGPT for three separate communication strategies: one targeting Israeli citizens, another aimed at Jewish communities worldwide, and a third focused on influential individuals in the United States. The adviser claimed to N12 that his requests were routine and that he consults ChatGPT on many topics, which is why he did not remember them specifically.

Critics of Netanyahu have seized upon Urich’s alleged actions as evidence of an influence operation against Israeli citizens. Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has criticized the current head of government for failing to remove Urich from his inner circle. The case has sparked controversy, with some accusing Netanyahu and his associates of engaging in psychological warfare against Israelis.
