Nvidia Discusses Boosting Investment in Open-Weight Model Developer

·

Nvidia is reportedly engaged in early-stage talks to strengthen its ties with a key developer of open-weight models, which could involve boosting its investment or providing computing power. The discussions are still at an exploratory stage, and no deal terms have been agreed upon. Nvidia has not commented on the matter, while the startup declined to provide any information.

The possible tie-up would align with Nvidia’s broader efforts to promote the development of open-weight models in the US. This push is part of a larger effort by the US government to encourage American companies to develop their own open-source and open-weight models, which could potentially become global standards in certain areas of business and academic research.

The startup in question has recently launched its first open-weight model, Beam, designed for use by developers and business customers. According to the company’s claims, Beam is cheaper than many competitors while still delivering strong reasoning results comparable to those achieved by GLM-5.2, a flagship open model from China’s Z.AI.

The startup, which was founded by two former Google DeepMind researchers, has already secured significant funding and partnerships with major players such as Elon Musk’s SpaceX and cloud provider Nebius Group NV. It is also reportedly seeking an additional US$2.5 billion in investment at a valuation of US$25 billion, according to previous reports.

Nvidia’s potential tie-up with the startup would be part of its ongoing efforts to cultivate the broader AI industry through strategic investments and partnerships. The company has already made several significant deals in recent months, including a US$13 billion agreement to buy AI model company Hugging Face and a roughly US$20 billion licensing pact with chip startup Groq.
