White House Unveils Framework for AI Oversight, Briefing Industry Leaders
The White House has finalized its framework for reviewing advanced artificial intelligence models. According to an administration official, the blueprint outlines how the federal government will work with leading AI developers before and after their most sophisticated models are deployed.
A meeting is scheduled on Tuesday between industry leaders and officials from the Office of the National Cyber Director, where a draft of the framework will be reviewed. Representatives from Anthropic, Google, Meta, and OpenAI have been invited to attend, along with other top AI companies.
The development comes as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to address potential safety and national security risks associated with advanced AI technology. The White House has opted for a light-touch regulatory approach, but critics argue that this may not be sufficient to mitigate the risks involved.
A June 2nd executive order outlined the voluntary framework, which was completed by its deadline of August 1st. However, it remains unclear whether the framework will be publicly released or remain confidential within industry circles.
The White House has been working closely with leading AI companies over the past few weeks to refine the contours of the framework. Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic jointly reviewed a draft in late July and submitted edits before its completion.
Despite the lack of clarity on public release, discussions are underway between the White House and industry leaders about next steps. The voluntary nature of the order raises questions about how companies not briefed by the White House will be able to opt-in if it is not released more widely.
The deadline for completing the framework was set 60 days after the executive order was signed, as stipulated in the order itself.
