East Patchogue Man Arrested for AI-Generated Child Sex Abuse Images
A 43-year-old man from East Patchogue has been arrested and charged with promoting a sexual performance by a child and possessing a sexual performance by a child. The arrest came after a search of his home turned up over 50 images that had been artificially altered using AI image generators.
The images, which were seized during the search, appear to show real minors engaged in sexual conduct, but have been digitally manipulated or created entirely through AI technology. This type of material is considered child exploitation and can be used to normalize and encourage the abuse of children.
According to authorities, the arrest was made possible by a tip from the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. The Suffolk Police’s Digital Forensics Unit executed a search warrant on August 13th, seizing multiple electronic devices that contained the images.
The Department of Justice has stated that federal child exploitation laws cover AI-generated images, even if they don’t depict real children being abused or don’t exist at all. This is because these images can still be used to promote and encourage the abuse of minors.
New York law also follows this approach, allowing prosecutors to bring charges based on images that appear to show a real minor engaged in sexual conduct, regardless of whether they are digitally altered or AI-generated. In cases like Zavesky’s, investigators said the devices contained child sex abuse images lifted from social media platforms and artificially altered using AI.
The arrest marks a significant step forward for law enforcement agencies nationwide, which have been increasingly pursuing such cases as technology makes it easier to create and distribute these types of images. The Suffolk Police Department has not released any further information on Zavesky’s arraignment or the ongoing investigation.
